This teaching unit treats subjects about themes that are related to the study programme and the future professional needs of the student. E.g. Videos about child psychology, psychology in the work environment, etc.

Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :
1	Reading Comprehension At the end of this teaching unit, the student should be able to read factual articles concerned with contemporary and field-related subjects and to understand them with a satisfactory level of autonomy. Level B1+ of  « The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ». Individual listening Comprehension : At the end of this teaching unit, the student should be ableto follow and to understand the main points of a presentation provided it is clearly structured and the topic is reasonably familiar and field-related, to understand the main points of most factual radio- and TV programs provided the topic is reasonably familiar and clearly articulated standard language is being used.  Interactive  listening comprehension: the student should be able to understand  most of what is said in an everyday conversation provided standard language is being used, the topic is familiar and without having the interlocutor adapt his language. Level B1+ of « The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ». Individual speaking skills: At the end of this teaching unit, the student should be able to give(after preparation) a simple and clearly developed presentation on a field-related subject and to manage the following debate. At the end of this teaching unit, the student should be able to to explain a viewpoint on a topical issue well enough in order to be understood without difficulty. Interactive speaking skills: At the end of this teaching unit, the student should be able to take an active part in discussion in familiar contexts, accounting for and sustaining your views. Level B1 of « The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ». Writing skills: At the end of this teaching unit, the student should be able to write formal letter in order to pass on factual information and to synthesise information and arguments from a number of sources Level B1 of « The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ». Code: At the end of this teaching unit the student should be able to master the basic vocabulary and of the general as well as specific (field-related) vocabulary. Level B1 of « The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ». Culture: At the end of this teaching unit the student is able to understand Dutch and Flemish cultural aspects. Level B1 of « The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ».

Content

This teaching unit  focuses mainly on oral production and listening. There are a few texts for reading compréhension to be read at home.
It deals with themes related to the area of study. Video and audio fragments as well as som texts are used to illustrated the themes. Each theme will be followed by discussions  giving the student the possibility to use the newly acquired vocabulary and structures. In the course of the year the students will give a mini presentation on a psychological subject.

Teaching methods

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the information in this section is particularly likely to change.

• Lessons in groups of max. 20 students.
• Note attesting to "attendance hours".
      If circumstances (in terms of health or the possibilities offered to us by the university authorities) permit, "face-to-face hours" consist of live teaching in a room assigned by the ILV. If "live teaching" is not possible, we will switch to digital lessons through Teams where the presence of students is required.
• Workload  -
  Classroom hours : 30 h
  Self-study (including e-learning): 30 h  
• Extension of psychology vocabulary .  In all cases the vocabulary is presented in context by means of topical listening documents. Additional exercises will have to be done at home (e-learning on the Moodle platform)
• Training and development of listening skills through authentique documents focussing mainly on psychological themes, by means of classroom teaching. Additional exercises will have to be done at home (e-learning on the Moodle platform)
• Training and development of speaking skills in professional contexts by means of classroom teaching .  Additional exercises will have to be done at home (e-learning on the Moodle platform).
• Training and development of reading skills, done at home and tested in class.

Evaluation methods

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the information in this section is particularly likely to change.

1. Vocabulary test and listening comprehension test in week 13 of Q1 (10 %)
2. Vocabulary test (20%) and test on listening comprehension (25%) and reading comprehension (15%° in the penultimate week of the course (May) 
3. Oral test (last week of the course in May) (25%)
4. Active and motivated presence and participation in class: 5%

If the health (or other) situation does not allow for face-to-face examination, the examination will take place on a platform with proctoring.
If at the examination with proctoring the teacher suspects that a student has committed fraud, she reserves the right to question the student orally afterwards on his knowledge and, if necessary, to adjust the marks.

If proctoring is not possible, the examination will be replaced by an oral examination.

IMPORTANT!: It is impossible to learn and improve a language without any regular practice.
Therefore, for this UE article 72 will be invoked. This means explicitly that students who have not been present at the learning activities at a regular basis (= more than 3 unjustified cases of absenteeism per quadrimester, could be excluded from enrollment for the exams of this EU by the jury.
