An introductory knowledge of Dutch literature and a good proficiency in Dutch (advanced level, B2 + of the Common European reference framework).
Main themes
In-depth study of contemporary Dutch-language literature from an intercultural perspective, with a focus on translational processes.
Critical Analysis of literary texts and their role in the literary field and in supranational literary history; detailed reading of theoretical and programmatic texts (produced by writers) and of critical material on the studied texts.

At the end of the course, students will be able to: - critically discuss the historical, literary and (inter)cultural contexts to which the studied texts are related; - put into practice the different text analysis methods used during the course; - deepen their literary and cultural knowledge; - critically interpret texts and integrate the intercultural and translational dimension in this heuristic approach; - read and write scholarly essays in the domain studied. |
Content
Because of the globalisation of cultural exchanges and the increase of migration flows, literary productions tend to become less and less distinctively monocultural or monolinguistic. They may therefore be understood from the point of view of their circulation and cultural transfers, which is where translation comes in too, but also from the ‘heterolingual’ relation they maintain within the original text itself with the reader, because they often challenge him/her by the ‘other’ languages that they contain.
This course proposes to study a side of contemporary Dutch-language literary production from the perspective of these questions.

Lectures supported by audio-visual materials and combined with interactive activities. The students are expected to do some preparatory reading and research in order to take part in the discussion. If possible, the course will be organised as a seminar.
Evaluation methods
Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the information in this section is particularly likely to change.
Continuous assessment. Active participation in the course or seminar (oral presentation, discussions and workshops) is required : 20 %. If you do not attend the course, you lose 20% of your final mark.Group presentation of an original analysis + discussion with the other students and teacher : 30 %.
Essay based on the presentation : 40 %.
Oral examen based on the essay: 10%.
