Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :
1	To develop interactive competence in English at the level of " proficient user " in the four skills (equivalent to the C1/C2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). By the end of the course, students should be able to : - understand complex academic texts (implied meanings). - interact efficiently in conversations in his social, professional and academic life. - speak and/or write in clear, well-structured academic language. follow complex presentations/talks.

Content

Academic English is a specific genre with specific textual and linguistic features. In this course, you will learn to use the linguistic features and rhetorical functions typical of academic English. We will also show you various reference tools to help you improve your academic skills.
The aim is for you to learn how to write an academic paper and give an academic presentation.
Please note that this is not a ‘general English’ conversation class.

Teaching methods

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the information in this section is particularly likely to change.

Vol.1 of the course (15h) will be taught to the whole group face-to-face (or via TEAMS if necessary - for example in the event of a health crisis such as COVID).
Vol.2 of the course (22h30) will be organized partly with the whole group and partly in sub-groups (to be defined according to the number of participants). Those sessions will be taught face-to-face (or via TEAMS if necessary - for example in the event of a health crisis such as COVID). Part of the vol.2 hours will be devoted to the exercises to be completed online.

Evaluation methods

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the information in this section is particularly likely to change.

Various compulsory exercises (to be carried out step-by-step as a preparation for the end of term paper) are to be completed online throughout the semester. This part of the course counts for 30% of the final grade.
Written EAP paper to be submitted onMoodle by June 1st (40% of the final grade) and a commented powerpoint presenting this work to be submitted to Moodle by June 1st (30% of the final grade).

Most documents, reference sources and exercise materials will be made freely available via the Moodle platform.
