Main themes
The seminar will focus on the following themes:
- classifying epigraphic texts: decrees, laws, treaties, accounts, inventories, offerings, epitaphs, manumission records, contracts, defixiones, etc.
- studying the Greek alphabet, from the Archaic to the Imperial periods.
- editing epigraphic texts.
- reading, commenting, and dating Greek inscriptions.
- developing technical skills: squeeze, photography, facsimile.
- mastering bibliographical tools and digital resources.

At the end of this seminar, students will be able to:

Content
Systematic classification of potentially engraved on stone or metal documents, and of Greek alphabets used from the Archaic to the Imperial periods. Technical exercises: squeezing, photographing, and making a facsimile. Training to do an epigraphic edition: writing a lemma, making a transcription, restitutions. Introduction to handling epigraphic corpora and working tools. Reading, translating, commenting and dating exercises.

The seminar consists of lectures, tutorials, coursework, and collective reading of Greek inscriptions.
