Main themes
The purpose of this course is to explore Europe's linguistic and cultural diversity, from a historical and critical perspective, and to examine how this diversity has influenced the European integration process.
The first part of the course will focus on the language aspect. We examine the development of languages in Europe, by comparing the standardisation processes for the main European languages. We also study the use of languages in Europe and their role in European integration.
The second part of the course explores the roots of the pluralism of European cultures, considering historical, anthropological, social and religious aspects. These are then examined with reference to topical examples, with a particular focus on the relations between the various EU Member States, and those with neighbouring countries (such as the relations between 'Western', 'Central' and 'Eastern' Europe).

The course aims to provide a better understanding of the situation of and issues relating to cultural and linguistic diversity in Europe, in the light of history. We will look beyond the differences to identify common cultural, historical and/or linguistic trends in Europe. We will research and analyse the origins and causes of this linguistic and cultural diversity, applying what we learn to current situations. We aim to discern what impact the diversity among Member States has had on the European integration process, and on the relations between the EU and its neighbouring countries. |
