The course focuses on learning the correct expressions and vocabulary to be able to explain dental treatment to an English speaking patient, to give technical explanations during a Powerpoint presentation on dentistry, as well as to be able to converse on everyday topics (socializing, telephone conversation, making an appointment, professional meeting).
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 This course focuses principally on developing speaking skills so that students will be able to greet an English speaking counterpart, express themselves without too much conspicuous searching for words, on familiar or less familiar topics related to their interests and professional life.
The student should also be able to give a structured Powerpoint presentation on dental health care or dental techniques and understand those given by their peers.
This requires using and pronouncing correctly dental terms, as well as broadening existing general vocabulary.  Grammar structures and idiomatic expressions used correspond to the B2+ C1 level of the 'Common European Framework for Languages'.
 
Content
Specialised vocabulary pertaining to dentistry is acquired via watching short videos in class (on gingivitis, root canal treatment, tooth extraction, etc). Consolidation takes place through role plays and conversations in small groups, as well as Powerpoint presentations on specific dental techniques. The final oral exam consists in a dentist/patient consultation.

  • This is a 30-hour course taught 2 hours a week throughout the first term 
  • Face-to-face classes with a maximum of 20 students.
  • Moodle platform with short films on dentistry.
  • Role-plays
  • Simulation of patient/dentist consultations.
Evaluation methods

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the information in this section is particularly likely to change.

The evaluation is made up of marks awarded to the class presentations, vocabulary,  grammar and pronunciation tests as well as the final oral exam which involves a dentist/patient consultation role-play preceded by a phone conversation to make an appointment.
