Main themes
The topics addressed in class aim at arousing the undergraduates' interests in English-speaking countries' culture and history, both past and present.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 At the end of the course, the students should be able to  
  • grasp the content and significance of articles and reports on topics connected with their interests or their jobs.
Reading comprehension : level B1 of the « Common European Framework of References for Languages »
  • understand the gist of TV  programmes concerning general topics and oriented towards their fields of interest in standard and clearly articulated English language.
Listening comprehension: level B1 of the « Common European Framework of References for Languages »
  • give their opinion on general topics (history, advertising, media, culture, ') covered in class.
Speaking: level B1-  of the « Common European Framework of References for Languages »
 
Content
Portfolio of texts and videos: the set texts range from historic/al sources to today's specialized literature and vary in language registers to include prose, speeches, poetry, songs, video scripts, ... from several target-language countries.
Teaching methods

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the information in this section is particularly likely to change.

! The teaching modalities may be subject to change in accordance with the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic. The students will of course be notified of these possible changes in due course.
In the context of the Covid-19 sanitary crisis, this course will be taught both on site and online (+ e-learning component).
  • Training learners to become autonomous readers of authentic written documents
  • Broadening the students' vocabulary scope
  • Teaching key grammar points such as tenses, auxiliaries, connectives and the passive voice.
  • Listening decoding strategies in a foreign language
  • Role plays, debates, discussions
  • English pronunciation and stress patterns.
As regards speaking skills, the emphasis will be on fluency rather than accuracy.

Continuous assessment = 30%
January exam = 20 %
Written exam
  • Reading & Listening comprehension questions

If the student fails this part, (s)he takes it again in June.
June Exam = 50%
Written exam (30%)

Oral exam (20%)

September exam
Students will not be exempted for a part of the exam. If you take the September exam, you have to re-do the written exam (70%) AND the oral exam (30%). Your continuous assessment mark will not be taken into account.

Oral Exams: June and  September 2021: on Teams (camera and microphone ON).
June 2021
If the June written exam cannot be organised on site:
1) oral exam 30% (instead of 20%) and written exam 40%.
2) if you've passed the January written exam (exempted students): NO written exam in June except if you send me a mail before May 8th: estelle.dagneaux@uclouvain.be
20% January written exam  for exempted students =>  40% in the final mark
3) if you've failed or if you haven't taken the January exam (Non exempted students): Written exam similar to the January exam. Platforms: Moodle and Teams.
September 2021
If the September written exam cannot be organised on site: the oral exam will account for 40% (instead of 30%) and the written exam will account for 60%.
