Main themes
The course offers a historical journey from the 19th century to the 21st, with the emphasis on the cultural implications of political, social and economic transformations. The major stages in 19th and 20th century Spanish history are analysed on the basis of written, visual and cinematic documentation.

At the end of the course, the student : - will master the principal aspects and stages of the history of Spain at the 19th and 20th century; - will be able to locate in its historical context a literary or artistic work of the 19th or 20th Spanish century. |

Content
The course alternates between presentation of the major stages of Spanish history of the 19th and 20th centuries and overviews of the most significant cultural currents, presented on the basis of a key work.
1. The century of political instability (1808-1875).Goya and the War of Independence.
2. Spain and the Restoration (1875-1931). Sorolla and Zuloaga confronted by fin-de-siècle Spain. Luis Buñuel and Dalí on the threshold of the 1930s.
3. Crises of the 1930s. Culture and war: the Spanish pavilion at the Paris Exposition universelle
4. Francoist Spain (1939-1975). The painting of Antonio Saura. The cinema of Carlos Saura.
5. The transition to democracy. La Movida and its descendants.
6. The Spain of autonomous regions. Basque and Catalan cinema of the 21st century.
