Main themes
The course covers the scientific technologies and methods commonly used in the main fields of art history, i.e. painting, sculpture, graphic arts and decorative arts.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 This course gives students a practical introduction to the most common scientific methods used to study works of art and emphasises the importance of material criticism of a work of art, with a view to more accurate evaluation (attribution, dating, authenticity, state of conservation). Students will therefore be able to use the reports and information obtained from the application of these methods and assess their usefulness in the study of the works. They will also be able to determine which method can best answer specific questions an art historian may have about an object being studied. During the practicals, the aim will be to train students' eyes; in other words, teach them to use all the material clues identified and reflect on their meaning and how they might be interpreted.

Content
The main topics covered will be: easel painting technology, various dating techniques, analysis methods using visible and invisible light spectra, 3D object acquisition, and physical and chemical analyses.
Teaching methods
Theoretical course and practical coursework.
Evaluation methods
Oral exam on the coursework and on the observation reports.
