Main themes
The Issues in Architecture:  History and Theory unit is taught by joint lecturers and is formed of 2 modules (Hist&Th A / Hist&Th B) which alternate from one year to the next in the first semester. The 2 modules are complementary, while at the same time remaining two teaching units which can be taken independently of each other.

The Hist&Th A unit focuses on one (or more) question(s) raised by architecture or the practice of architecture from the history and theory of architecture.

L'UE Hist&Th B focuses on one (or more) question(s) raised by the history and theory of architecture from architecture or the practice of architecture.

This/these question(s) will be announced at the beginning of the course.
 
A general issue which comes up repeatedly in (the practice of) architecture, raises questions in the history of art and architectural theories.
This may involve:
  • limits, making use of the principles of distinction in architecture, thresholds and the inside-outside binomial etc.
  • emptiness, making use of the principles such as formation, space and matter in architecture
  • rhythm, making use of the principles such as composition, measurement and geometry in architecture
The issues relate to theoretical reference corpora, key historical moments and points in debates on the position of the discipline of architecture both in the long term and during the present time. It could involve, for example, studying a work or the output of a thinker (philosopher, sociologist, anthropologist, etc.) from 'contextual' reference points to 'contemporary' extensions.

The Issues in Architecture:  History and Theory - module A is designed to:
  • enhance the acquisition of architectural knowledge through the formation of a corpus of knowledge  (architectural procedures, contributions from history and theory) to help students find their way in architectural thinking.
  • develop students' ability to express their own thinking on a specific subject.
  • develop students' ability to set out and advance basic elements in the discipline to support one (or more) specific responses within the field of architecture.
