Although we do not yet know how long the social distancing related to the Covid-19 pandemic will last, and regardless of the changes that had to be made in the evaluation of the June 2020 session in relation to what is provided for in this learning unit description, new learnig unit evaluation methods may still be adopted by the teachers; details of these methods have been - or will be - communicated to the students by the teachers, as soon as possible.

Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

This unit contributes to the acquisition and development of the following learning outcomes, as assigned to the Master's degree in translation :

AA-FS-AL.Develop expertise and a high level of competence in literary translation in the broader sense and specifically producing original works or revising existing pieces that involve the use of language for aesthetic ends: translating literary works of fiction or texts pertaining to traditional genres; literature associated with the image and other artistic domains; translating texts for publication and (an option only available in certain languages) translation in the domains of 'Publicity & Marketing'.  
Specific learning outcomes on completion of teaching unit
On completing this unit the student is able to:
·         Translate a short literary text, selected from a given genre and author, from Russian into French, respecting the entirety of the semantic, linguistic and stylistic  content; 
Defend through argument the translation options effected.

Content
Translation of Russian classical literary texts (mainly short stories), without slang, neologisms or archaisms. 
Workshop aiming at the translation of Ivan Bunin's short stories. 
Teaching methods
  • Workshop.
    1. Translation. Presentation of the author and the text. Brief introduction to the author in the context of Russian literary history and culture. Text analysis (genre, style, intertextuality, etc.). Confrontation of individual translations, discussion and justification of translational choices, etc. Comparison of the individually finalized translation with a published one, critical comments and discussion.
    2. Complementary exercises. Critical comment of published translations of a same text. Stylistic exercises with specific short texts of different types, etc.
  • Home work.
  1. Preparation of the different tasks and translations according to the terms and specifications of the translation project.
  2. Finalization of the different tasks and translations according to the terms and specifications of the translation project.
Evaluation methods
The first session (end of semester) overall evaluation covers the student's work accomplished during the translation workshop.
Home work (abiding by the terms and specifications of the translation project he or she will be submitted to as well as accomplishing the required « tasks » in due time) will be as important as presence and participation in the in-situ training sessions of the workshop.
The student's presence is requested at all in-situ training sessions of the translation workshop.

The final evaluation of the translation workshop may be completed or replaced - in agreement with the students - by an in-situ 4-hour translation exam to be completed in the working conditions of a professional translator's workstation during the official examination session. The student will be given a text directly related to the special field of study of the semester, as well as other related tasks to complete in accordance with the specifications.

The second session (September session) overall evaluation consists of an in-situ 4-hour translation exam in the working conditions of a professional translator's workstation. The student will be given a text directly related to the special field of study of the semester, as well as other related tasks to complete in accordance with the specifications.
