In order to reach these goals, the course offers an analysis of a specific question, one time in the political field and the next time in the economical field.

Aims
At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |
| 1 | clarify fundamental categories for ethical thought in the context of important questions about society |
| 2 | relate the contributions of Christian traditions to public debates on social bound |
| 3 | analyse the issues about the social involvements of Christians in dialogue with other convictions. |

Content
Theories and practices of democracy and the role of religions (2019-2020, Q1)
Democracy is still recognized as the best form of government in the Western world and in other regions of the planet. But it is undergoing a profound crisis. The course reconstructs some major lines of debate in political theory and presents a variety of models of democratic deliberation. The current situation is characterized by the rise of right-wing and left-wing populisms and by the difficulty of organising majorities after the decline of political parties which traditionally had their place at the heart of the mechanics of power. The course particularly focusses on expressions of political ethics that have been developed in different religious traditions. The concept of “public theology” will be introduced and tested within selected contexts.

Teaching methods
There will be lectures and also important interactive moments based on texts that have to be read by all participants.
Evaluation methods
The elements of evaluation are the regular and active participation, the writing of a short essay (maximum 5 pages on a subject that can be chosen among the topics of the course) and an oral exam.
