Main themes
The course will situate architectural composition with respect to its anthropological (human beings as "talking animals") and cultural (Greco-Latin) conditions. The course places a certain emphasis on composition in "elevation" (in the sense that a façade results from an elevation of matter above the ground plane), since the design studio gives ample opportunity for understanding composition in plan. Case studies derived from major moments in Western architectural history will help elucidate the methods that have been and are available, including contradictory or conflicting aspects.
