Content
The course deals whith the various players of power inside the Burgundian space, putting emphasis on the northern part of these territories ("pays de par-deçà).
Whereas historians are debating the reality of a state-building project by the Valois dukes, it is certainly important to investigate the motivations and means of the people who kept political life going in these principalities.  Considering in the first place the values and convictions which were displayed by princes, we will study the tangible aspects of authority, through its transfer (duchess, governor, ambassador), its emotional and even passionate sides (councilors and protégés), its chaotic routine (officers) and the continuous dialogue with subjects (representative assemblies and rebellions). Far from a fruitless description of the mere institutions, we hope to present power as a living and incarnate topic.

Evaluation methods

The final written examination will consist in commenting on a medieval document, and writing a short composition - both of the exercises requiring knowledge and a critical mind.
Online resources
Powerpoint projections related to the course sessions, as well as all analysed documents, will be made available through the Moodle platform on the course site.
