The course focuses on the mutations of the regulatory models due to the current globalization processes. On the epistemological level, the approach is based upon the project of an evaluative sociology, which meets the challenge of constructing a comprehensive, normative and practical framework.
The course will deal with the three main trends in the discourse of social science : (1) the neo-functionalist approach of the globalization (Luhmann, Teubner); (2) the domination-based critical approach (post-colonial studies, Boaventura de Sousa Santos, Hardt and Negri, James Tully); (3) pragmatist theories of the globalization (Habermas, Joas, Cohen). The aim of the course is to help the students to develop their own critical gaze on these conceptual frameworks.
This journey in the sociological discourse on globalization will try to draw the outlines of a general theory of societal constitutionalism. He will show the connection between sociological fieldwork and theories; legal constitution and societal constitutionalism; constitutionalization “from below” and “up-down constitutionalization“.
