1. Acute illness causing or possibly causing vital risks, as seen in emergency medicine or intensive care medicine

• hemodynamic pathology of which cardiogenic shock and septic shock
• respiratory pathology of which pulmonary embolism, severe pneumonia and ARDS
• abdominal pathology of which acute pancreatitis and acute hepatic failure
• neurological pathology of which severe traumatic brain injury, cerebral vascular accident and status epilepticus
• metabolic, toxic and environmental pathology
• severe trauma
• multiple organ failure, causes and consequences

3. Anesthetics: different types of anesthesia and its indications, pre-anesthetic work-up, short term and long term complications

Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :
1	Skills to be acquired: The courses dedicated to intensive care aim to introduce the student to the main physiopathological mechanisms and diagnostic aspects leading the patient to a critical state.   Main goals:   The student will acquire theoretical and practical skills allowing to recognize a critical patient. Physiopathological mechanisms of diseases and treatments will be learned.

Content

This course is dedicated on one hand to the critically ill patient, either hospitalized or no, and on the other hand to the patient needing an intervention requiring anesthesia. This patient could be a child or an adult.
Each year the course is given by 4 teachers: an anesthetist, an intensivist, a pediatric intensivist and an emergency physician.

Teaching methods

Lectures essentially based on physiopathology and semiology, with both theory and clinical cases

Evaluation methods

June session: multiple choice questionnaire or open questions with short answers; based on theory teached during classes or clinical problem solving.
September session: same principle as during June session. Or if few students: oral exam with clinical problem solving based on theory.
