Content
In 2017-2018, the seminar will be given by Professor Agnès Guiderdoni, in collaboration with Clément Duyck PhD. The seminar will be devoted to the French literature in the baroque age, extending from the end of the 16th to the first half of the 17th century. It will consist in two parts : first an overview of the works, authors, genres and main themes of this kind of literature, and second, a moment of reflection on the notion itself. The « French baroque literature » was coined by the pionneering work of Jean Rousset in 1953, in La Littérature de l'âge baroque en France. Circé et le Paon. Soon after the publication of the book, the notion of « baroque » applied to the French literature proved to be hotly debated among French literary scholars. It indeed contained ideological and political issues related to French literature historiography. The seminar will aim at exploring these issues.
Teaching methods
The seminar is given alternatively by Professors Guiderdoni and Zanone : in 2016-2017, Professor Zanone ; in 2017-2018, Professor Guiderdoni.
Evaluation methods
Written essay to be prepared individually. This work will lead to an oral presentation during a last session of the seminar. It will have to be returned at the beginning of the examination session.
