1

The student will receive in this seminar the grounding necessary to carry out a research task in the field of contemporary Spanish literature and to take part in a scholarly debate in this field.

The contribution of this Teaching Unit to the development and command of the skills and learning outcomes of the programme(s) can be accessed at the end of this sheet, in the section entitled “Programmes/courses offering this Teaching Unit”.
Content
The seminar will study the representation of the figure of Jesus Christ in the novel and poetry of the 20th and 21st centuries in Latin America. The hypothesis underlying the proposed problem is that this figure tackles the complex processes at work in contemporary Latin American societies: (1) cultural hybridity, where Catholicism as an instrument of Spanish conquest is the object of an appropriation ('contraconquista') through subversion and / or syncretism; (2) secularization, which affects the representation of the sacred, the metaphysical quest, the ritual and worship life; (3) the reception of the philosophies of suspicion which reinforce a critical approach to the Christian heritage in certain writers (attention will be paid in particular to the reception of the essay by F. Nietzsche The Antichrist, 1888).
Teaching methods
The method will be based in particular on the tools proposed for the intertextual analysis (Genette, Kristeva, Jenny, Rifaterre, Samoyault) and mytho-critique (Brunel). The theoretical framework will be based on studies related to the question of neo-baroque (Parkinson Zamora), violence and the sacred (Girard), Latin American christology (Jon Sobrino), secularization (Gutiérrez Girardot, etc.).
Evaluation methods
The evaluation concerns a written work submitted at the end of the semester, following a discussion of a provisional state within the seminar. In case of insufficient participation in the seminar (not reading the preparatory documents, non-delivery of a draft version, absence to the debates), points will be withdrawn to the note received for the final written work.
