Prerequisites
Students must have reached B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
The LANGL1330 course for students in BAC1 is designed to prepare the students for the second annual unit.

The course is structured around various issues of general interest related to the students' field of studies.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

At the end of the course students are expected to have reached the following levels (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) in the following skills:

Reading comprehension:

  • Students can understand articles and reports on everyday topics and can understand the writer's point of view.
  • Students can quickly scan long and complex texts and grasp the main ideas.
  • Students have built up a wide range of (reading) vocabulary although some difficulties may occur with unusual expressions.

Level B2- of the "Common European Framework of References for Languages".

Listening comprehension individual:

  • Students can understand standard spoken English (live or from recordings) on both familiar and unfamiliar topics normally encountered in personal, social, university or professional life. Interactive:
  • Students can understand a normal conversation, with the occasional repeating of certain words or expressions.

Level B2- of the "Common European Framework of References for Languages".

Speaking skills individual:

  • Students can methodically develop a presentation or a description emphasizing the important points and relevant details.
  • Students can give a detailed description and presentation of a wide range of subjects related to their field of studies and develop and justify their ideas using relevant examples.

Level B2 of the "Common European Framework of References for Languages".

Speaking skills interactive:

  • Students can express themselves with ease about familiar and less familiar topics pertaining to their interests and field of studies.
  • Students can answer simple straightforward questions linked to their presentation.

Level B1+ of the "Common European Framework of References for Languages".

Building-up general vocabulary in context and reinforcing specific structures in English (gerunds/infinitives).

Content
This course has a receptive and productive component:
  • self-study of texts, using scanning and other reading techniques;
  • in-depth analysis and explanation of texts in class;
  • general or more detailed understanding of video programmes in a language laboratory according to the rhythm of each student;
  • oral class presentation in groups of 3 or 4; writing of a mail to a TED speaker and of a film review;
  • vocabulary and language structures are practised and developed via speaking activities (role plays, interviews, conversation in small groups).
Teaching methods
Learning takes place in context on the basis of authentic texts and videos.
Reading and listening comprehension are exploited orally and in writing.
Speaking is exercised via debates, role-plays and talks in groups.
Writing is developed through the writing of an email to a TED speaker and a film review.
Vocabulary and structures are revised both orally and in writing.
The teaching unit takes place mainly face to face.
Basic vocabulary and grammar mistakes are revised on the Moodle platform.
Evaluation methods
  1. Evaluation in December (20%), written exam on the first quadrimester material:
    reading comprehension,
    listening comprehension,
    vocabulary,
    most common grammar mistakes.
  2. Evaluation in March (20%), written exam on the second quadrimester material:
    reading comprehension,
    listening comprehension,
    vocabulary,
    grammar (test on the basic tenses),
    most common vocabulary mistakes
  3. Evaluation in April (10%), oral exam:
    individual discussion of a press article
  4. Continuous assessment (50%), one talk in groups and two individual writing assignments during the year.
