Aims

Contribution of teaching unit to learning outcomes assigned to programme

This unit contributes to the acquisition and development of the following learning outcomes, as assigned to the Master's degree in translation :

AA-FS-AIE. Develop expertise and a high level of competence in specialized translation in the field of international relations under different headings (diplomacy, geopolitics, geostrategy, etc.) incorporating elements specific to this sphere: adapt to text-type (treaties and agreements, speeches, reports, monographs, etc.) and to the particular requirements of the client (national and international organisations and institutions, NGO's, diplomatic services, research institutes, etc.).  

 

Specific learning outcomes on completion of teaching unit

On completing this unit the student is able to:

·         Translate in a professional manner (respecting specifications) a text on matter pertaining to international relations employing documentary research and ensuring in the translation process to respect the author's intentions, the appropriate terminology and phraseology, as well as the rules of the language studied

·         Carry out relevant and effective documentary and terminological research;

·         Identify documentation in French and in one of the languages studied which is relevant and useful in dealing with the source text (comprehension, translation and accurate reformulation)

Identify and comprehend in the source text terms and concepts pertinent to the given domain of specialization,with the aid of suitably informative texts in both French and one of the languages studied

Analyse the specific discursive character of the source text so as to identify the means to employ in ensuring functional harmony between source and target text.

Evaluation methods

The first session (end of semester) overall evaluation covers the student's work accomplished during the translation workshop.
The student will demonstrate his or her professional skills and knowledge by abiding by the terms and specifications of the translation project he or she will be submitted to, not only  in terms of quality of the « final product », but also in terms of how the methodology used (appropriate approach towards the translation process, appropriate use of CAT-tools) meets the objectives in every single required « tasks » (summary report of French specialized corpus documents, summary translation of Russian specialized corpus documents, self-revision and/or cross-revision, full translation of specialized texts, etc.).
The following criteria will also be taken into account: formal presentation requirements, deadlines, translator's professional code of ethics.
The final evaluation of the translation workshop may be completed or replaced , in agreement with the students , by a translation exam during the official examination session.
The student's presence is requested at all in-situ training sessions of the translation workshop.

The second session (September session) overall evaluation consists of an in-situ 4-hour translation exam in the working conditions of a professional translator's workstation. The student will be given a text directly related to the special field of study of the semester, as well as other related tasks to complete in accordance with the specifications.

Teaching methods

The training methodology consists of multiple tasks aiming at providing the student with the best training in the field of specialized translation by using and/or expanding his or her skills and knowledge concerning not only field of International Affairs , but also the specialized language and the specific discourse used in the field of International Affairs, in order to adapt the translation process to the specific type of text (official documents, speech, scientific or journalistic articles, etc.).  
Others related tasks may be required, such as : documentary and/or terminology research applied to translation, corpus-based terminology and collocation extraction, summary report of French specialized corpus documents, summary translation of Russian specialized corpus documents, self-revision and/or cross-revision, etc.)

Content

Professionally oriented translation of texts related to the Russian Federation as a key player in the international community, to the Russian Federation's position on the international stage, to Russia's foreign policy.
