Reconciling chronology with key elements, the course will give its full scope to political life in the Low Countries (and especially in their southern part) from the hurried twilight of the Burgundian era to their integration into French territory at the end of the 18th century. Both institutions and events will be considered through the traditional prism of the existing tension between the princely desire for centralization and particularistic resistance, but also from the angle of the variety of players, who, most of the time, interacted rather smoothly: kings, governors, councillors, officials, representative assemblies, towns. Diplomacy, war, taxation, legislation, justice, we will try to comprehend the whole theme over three centuries, dealing with the hazards of high standard politics without neglecting everyday regulation.
