The seminar studies the meanings and the functions of pictures within ancient and modern societies. Complementary to the courses of the filière « Iconologie et études des cultures visuelles », the seminar addresses each year a different topic in relation with the production of images within the arts and visual culture in general.

 

Aims

It is the aim of the seminar that the student develops a critical sense and analytical methods as well as the ability to accomplish a cross-epochal investigation.

Evaluation methods

The students are evaluated on the basis of their active participation, one presentation and one thesis about a specific subject.

Content

The seminar proposes to study art within a broader context of visual studies. According to the chosen topic, the aim is to understand how visual practices and images inscribe themselves, on a synchronic level, into a specific socio-cultural context and, on a diachronic level, into a historical and epistemological evolution.
