2. A study of the choice of literary themes;
3. Ageneral presentation of the methods of transmission of Latin literature and of its aesthetic specificity.
At the end of this course, the student will have acquired a general view of the Latin literature, within a chronological and historic framework. He will have acquired a method of clarifying, of researching and of presentation of references to ancient sources of Latin literature, including minor works and authors.
The contribution of this Teaching Unit to the development and command of the skills and learning outcomes of the programme(s) can be accessed at the end of this sheet, in the section entitled “Programmes/courses offering this Teaching Unit”.
In BAC 12, the final mark takes account of:
- evaluation of the interrogations on the manual of Latin literature (60%);
- oral exam based on a discussion of the dossier of the reading summaries (40%).
In BAC 13, the final mark takes account of:
- evaluation of the heuristic dossier (40%);
- an oral exam based on a discussion of the dossier of the reading summaries (60%).
The lectures present several subjects or chapters of Latin literature in the shape of summaries prepared by the lecturer. This will be fleshed out by personal study of the notions of the history of Latin literature from a manual, by a program of home reading of texts in translation, by technical exercises involving the search for references in a library.
The course is organised around chosen literary themes, which are placed in their historical and cultural context.
A selection of works that are representative of Latin literature will be proposed to the student, who will read them in a French translation and prepare a summary. The reading notes are to be handed in at the exam.
In BAC 12, the course requires the obligatory study of a manual of the history of Latin literature.
In BAC 13, the student must carry out an heuristic work, that aims to elucidate a reference list of Latin sources.
Obligatory reading :
1. A general work on Latin literature (BAC 12) : J. Gaillard, Approches de la littérature latine, Paris, 1992.
2. A selection of Latin works (A complete list will be distributed at the lectures).
Suggested reading:
H. Zenacker, J.C. Fredouille, Littérature latine, Paris, 1993.
