Level A1 of the Common Europea Framework of Reference for Languages

Main themes

1. basic vocabulary: by means of different methods, lexical fixation with particular attention given to the process of word composition and derivation;
2. grammar applications: fixation of grammatical knowledge (from a morphological, syntactical and semantical point of view)
3. oral skills and listening comprehension skills: exercises in order to improve oral skills (pronunciation, intonation, stress) , as well as communicative skills Systematic exercises are organized in language labs (series of 30 hours)

Aims

To acquire the communicative competence of an elementary user in two aptitudes: listening comprehension skills and oral skills (both individual and interactive)
During this course, the student will be able:
-to understand and take part in an improvised talk (i. e. with a native speaker) about (I) an everyday topic or (II) a topic dealt with in the media
-to join a discussion about a familiar topic (i.e. a topic that the student has already studied): the student will be able to understand the arguments used
-to follow factual information presented (for example) on the radio or on television and report to the content as a whole

Evaluation methods

The exam consists of three parts, in line with the given objectives and deals with the same topics seen in class (appropriate use of the acquired skills)
The evaluation of the linguistic code (vocabulary, grammar, etc.) will be integrated into the evaluation of the practical skills
-evaluation of listening comprehension skills(analytical as well as global): 35 %
-evaluation of grammar and basic vocabulary (30%)
-evaluation of oral skills (individual as well as interactive): 35 %

Teaching methods


-15 hours of theory-based course (one module) during which thematic fields (see above), presented by means of press articles, audio recordings and video, are discussed and analysed.

- 15 hours of conversation (max. 20 students) about the topics seen in the course; authentic documents about the same topics are presented in order to stimulate oral interaction.

- 20 hours of study and self-tuition, especially:
- systematic and personal self-study of the basic vocabulary
- preparation of grammar and listening comprehension exercises
- revising and studying notes, memorisation

Content

The topics covered are mainly presented in the media and deal with social, political and cultural (in the broad sense) life and sport. Vocabulary and basic grammar are analysed and studied using this topics as a base (II)

The course is coordinated by an academic member of the GERM-Department, who is helped by an assistant, who will also take part in the end of the year evaluation
