The course is open to everyone (UCL students, UCL staff, students not otherwise registered at UCL).

Main themes

The course is structured around various themes (e.g. shopping, telephone, work).

Code: proficiency in the basic vocabulary and structures (1,000 basic words).

  • Vocabulary: consolidation and extension.
  • Oral expression: emphasis on communication rather than correctness; however, particular attention is paid to phonetic correctness;

Culture: at all levels, awareness of the Greek culture.

Aims

Reading comprehension:

  • description of  events,
  • expression of feelings and wishes,
  • articles and reports on contemporary issues.

Listening comprehension - individually:

  • conferences and discourses,
  • TV shows on actualities and information;

Listening comprehension - interactively:

  • conversation on some common subject.

Oral expression - individually:

  • ability to express clearly one's centers of interest, to develop one's viewpoint;

Oral expression -  interactively:

  • ability to communicate easily and spontaneously,
  • to take an active part in conversations in familiar situations,
  • to present and defend one's views.

Evaluation methods

Several marks are taken into account for the final mark:

  1. continuous evaluation,
  2. written examination,
  3. oral examination.
Teaching methods

Learning takes place in context, based on documents adapted for teaching and/or true documents (reading and listening comprehension).

Vocabulary and basic structures are exercised in, consolidated, and widened by means of written and oral exercises (drill exercises, role playing games, interviews, conversations in small groups of 2 or 4 students).
