Main themes

Mastery of the Latin grammar, prosody and metrics.

This course deals with the following themes:

1. Detailed study of Latin prosody and verse metres;

2. Fundamental structures of Latin syntax (especially the detailed study of relative clauses);

3. Personal translation of a Latin poetical text (cursory reading).

Aims

At the end of the course, the student will be capable of understanding the principles and the methods of the syntactical description of Latin. He will be able to translate from French into Latin at an advanced level, as well as translate and analyse Latin poetical texts. In order to achieve this goal, he will have mastered the fundamental rules of Latin prosody and metrics (including reading poetical texts with the metrical scansion).

Evaluation methods

Regular tests during the year (in the classroom and homework); the result does not account for the final evaluation.

Final exam consisting of a written portion and an oral, designed to test theoretical knowledge and practical skills (including translation into/from Latin/French). Global success implies the passing of both the written and oral examination.

Teaching methods

Lectures coupled with practical exercises (including composition and verse).

Content

The course is articulated around the following themes:

1. theoretical and practical study of Latin relative clauses. The constructions analysed are illustrate;
2. detailed study of prosody and Latin metres ( with reading exercises) ed by linguistic analysis of phrases and classical texts.
3. Initiation into literary translation from French into Latin.
4. Personal translation of a poetic text (Book II of the Aeneid, extracts from Tibullus).
