Main themes

An introduction to Greek literature in verse, from its origins to the Hellenistic period.

Alternately with LGLOR 1441, this course deals with the following themes:

1. An overview of the history of Greek literature;
2. The principal works in poetry.

Aims

At the end of this course, the student will have acquired a general view of Greek literature, within a chronological and historic framework. He will be familiar with the Greek authors whose works are prescribed reading in the course.

Evaluation methods

The final marks will include:

- an oral exam on the contents of the course (notes on reading are to be presented);'
- the written work on the text chosen.

Teaching methods

The lectures are illustrated by the reading of various extracts, and are completed by an obligatory reading list for individual study.

Content

Dedicated to poetic works, the main course gives a chronological overview of Greek literature emphasizing the principal authors and main works.This general knowledge will be reinforced by a personal reading of one or two texts consecrated to the subject.

A selection of representative works of Greek literature in verse will be proposed to the student, who must read these in a French translation, and resume them. In addition, he must produce a text of three pages on a text of his choice.
