Main themes

Terminology and technology of fabrication. Their importance for piecing together the history of the coins and their issue. Metrology and its methods. Monetary alloys and the sources of the metals. Monetary epigraphy. The message conveyed by the inscriptions on the coins. Study of the iconographic documentation for the buildings, statues and other realia.

Aims

Introduction to methods of classification and the methodological use of Byzantine, Greek, Celtic and Roman numismatic sources.

Evaluation methods

Written exam.

Teaching methods

The course consists of lectures.

Content

-  Technical aspects of coinage: sources of the metals, monetary alloys, minting technology, organisation of minting.

-  Monetary metrology and quantification: monetary and weight standards ; quantifying monetary supplies and monetary production

-  Monetary typology and iconography: analysis of types, legends, "symbols" and various marks

-  History of coinage in Ancient Times, from the earliest electrum coins up to the late Roman Empire.
