Main themes

En alternance avec LGLOR1441, ce cours aborde les thèmes suivants :

1. Un aperçu de l'histoire de la littérature grecque;
2. Les oeuvres majeures rédigées en vers.

Aims

An introduction to Greek literature in verse, from its origins to the Hellenistic period.

At the end of this course, the student will have acquired a general view of Greek literature, within a chronological and historic framework. He will be familiar with the Greek authors whose works are prescribed reading in the course.

Evaluation methods

The final marks are based on an oral exam on the course matter and a written work on one of the works studied during the course

Teaching methods

The lectures are illustrated by the reading of various extracts, and are completed by an obligatory reading list for individual study

Content

This course is devoted to the study of Greek poetry. The theoretical course gives a chronological overview of Greek literature, highlighting the principle authors and works, an overview which will be reinforced by the private reading of one or two works devoted to this subject.

A series of poetic works will be drawn to the student's attention, who should endeavour to read these works in translation and to prepare a summary thereof. The student will prepare an essay of three pages on a work of his choice.
