Main themes

Lectures, using audio-visual material. Subjects dealt with: the origins, Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, the Petrarchans, Tasso, Ariosto, baroque theatre and opera.

Aims

- Basic course;
- This course aims to introduce students to the great authors of the Middle Ages and of the baroque period and to develop their literary sensibility;
- Introduction to the language of the Middle Ages.

Evaluation methods

Continuous assessment : two written assignments, oral defence of a written thesis and two written tests.

The assessment will also relate to the work done by students independently :
-   they are expected to know how to summarise texts from the syllabus
-   they are expected to know the most important bio-bibliographical details about the authors covered in the course.

Content

Students will explore the main trends in Italian literature from the Middle Ages to the 18th century.

Students will learn the main linguistic features of Italian from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance in the practical sessions and will be required to give oral presentations of topics related to both the lectures and the practical sessions.

With the help of tools available in the library and online, students will be required to do their own independent research into the important bio-bibliographical details of the authors covered in the course.
