Main themes Various conversation activities, such as role plays, debates, discussions, simulations, etc. on a variety of topics which are relevant for the students' future professional careers. Students interact in small groups or pairs. Detailed feedback is given at the end of each activity, with comments on the mistakes made. Tests are organised to check progress and study of the "usages notes based on frequent mistakes".
Aims Reading: - Although not the main objective of the course, short authentic texts or articles are referred to and may serve as the basis for discussions. - Level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Listening: - Although not the main objective of the course, short extracts of English language films or television programmes may be shown in class either to familiarise students with different accents or as a starting point for discussions. - Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Speaking Individually : - Students should be able to express their views clearly on familiar topics as well on more general current events. Interactively : - to state their opinions clearly and to back them up with explanations and arguments in the context of a debate. Level B2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Writing: Not the main objective of the course. Students are expected to communicate with the teacher by e-mail in English. Occasionally they may be asked to write a short text or a few sentences as a basis for discussion. Level B2 of the Common European Framework. Code - vocabulary : consolidation of basic vocabulary, as well as vocabulary related to the topics dealt with in class. Self-study of "usage notes based on frequent lexical mistakes" - grammar : consolidation of grammatical structures used in spoken language. Self-study of "usage notes based on frequent grammatical mistakes". However, the emphasis is always placed on communication. - pronunciation: self-study of a list of commonly mispronounced words.
Content Year of studies : Open to all UCL students who are allowed by their faculty to choose the course as part of their programme. Rhythm : 30 hours; either 1h/week the whole year or 2h/week during one semester. Objectives : Developing oral communication to enable students to function in the relevant social contexts. Evaluation : Continuous assessment, oral exam.
Other information Prerequisites: This course being of upper-intermediate level, the productive command of basic grammar and vocabulary as well as the command of the language skills of the B2 level as described in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, is required. Assessment: Continuous assessment throughout the year taking into account preparation of activities and class participation, as well as the results obtained at the written tests. Oral examination at the end of the year : discussion in pairs or small groups on a given topic. Course material: Course notes containing the "usage notes based on frequent mistakes", together with exercises and keys, as well as the material needed for the conversation activities (texts, vocabulary lists, documents of various kinds,...) Training staff: During contact hours, students communicate orally in pairs or small groups on a wide range of topics. The course is either organised over the whole academic year (1h/week) or over one term (2h/week). Teacher is available during office hours and contactable by e-mail
