By emphazising the written sources at our disposal, the course focuses on various topics concerning Near Eastern civilization (prayers, feast and magical rituals), and Egyptian civilization (didactic, narrative, and poetic literature).

| Aims |
This course, designed to enhance the student's knowledge of the ancient Near Eastern and Egyptian civilizations, aims at developing their scientific approach to some literary questions.

| Content |
The part dealing with Near East concerns an elaborate study on royal Hittite prayers, a description of major Anatolian and Syrian festivals, and an analysis of magical practices in Asia Minor and Syria.
The part dealing with Egypt examines the following literary works : teachings and wisdom texts ; Sinuhe, the Shipwrecked Sailor, the Eloquent Peasant, and Wenamun ; hymns, prayers, and lyric poetry.

Course entry requirements : course GLOR 1511 and a basic knowledge of Hittite and/or Egyptian language.
Evaluation : students will be assessed orally by one of both teachers.
Course material : A summary of the course and a bibliography will be provided. The course is richly illustrated.
