Aims

To be able to analyse the relationship between the hypotext and the hypertext, between the text to be transposed and the transposed text. To know how to recognize the strategies of rewriting. To know how to interpret the effects of rewriting.

Main themes

In this seminar, we will study the connection born out of the mythic and literary transposition between the transposed text and the text to be transposed. This discourse pertains the rewriting of a narrative text in a dramatic text, lyrical or cinematographical. Students will either analyse the transposition/rewriting of a novel into another genre (theatre, lyric opera, sculpture, cinematographic script, tableau), either rewrite a narrative text in a theatrical text. We will privilege franco-italian themes such as, for instance, the rewriting of French works in Italy or the rewriting of Italian pieces in France.

Content and teaching methods

Examples : Maupassant and D'Annunzio : D'Annunzio, in his Novelle della Pescara, rewrites shortstories by Maupassant. The transposition operates itself in a rigorous fashion, without bringing to light its sources. D'Annunzio appropriates itself the French author. Though nearing plagiarism and simple translation, the results obtained by D'Annunzio manage to create an autonomous parallel world, thanks to the textual interventions and manipulations, albeit secondary at first sight. The seminar will analyse the strategies of manipulation, of rewriting, as well as the effects obtained through them.

Prerequisite (ideally in terms of competences). To know the basics pertaining to narratology and textual analysis. Evaluation : the student, after having taken a series of common lectures, will procede to writing-up a paper, according to scientific and literary norms. He will distribute his work to the instructors and participants and will discuss it with them. He will thereafter write-up the final draft of his work. The evaluation will be based on the final work.
