Introduction

This Bibliography is confined to philosophical Literature on Black Africa. The question “how to distinguish genuinely philosophical works, from works which are only philosophical in appearance, or whose relationship to philosophy is still too remote”, has been settled by the Interafrican Council for Philosophy, admittedly “in a very liberal way”.

Following the Council's criteria, we decided to “take into account, for inclusion, not only such conceptual analyses as are usually valued in our Philosophy Departments (i.e. Philosophy stricto sensu), but the whole range of works which are, or could be, of direct interest for the African Philosopher today, including those works of anthropology or sociology which describe, or reconstruct, or deal in some other way, with collective ideas of such and such African peoples” (HOUNTONDJI, Paulin J., (ed), Bilan de recherche philosophique africaine. Both published and unpublished works are included, except for the list of numerous graduate papers. In particular, the present Bibliography includes Philosophy books, articles or texts written by Africans, including Afro-Americans of the Diaspora, as well as all philosophical works published on Africa or edited in Africa, whatever the origins and nationalities of the authors (Cfr HOUNTONDJI, Paulin J., (ed), o.c., p. X-XV).

In the present Repertory, authors are listed in alphabetical order, and their writings are listed chronologically. The bibliography is confined to philosophical literature publiced in occidental languages and/or african languages.

The titles of books and collective works (like the Proceedings of a Congress) are preceded by an asterisk * to distinguish them from other documents.

Introduction

La présente bibliographie vise l'inventaire complet de la littérature philosophique concernant l'Afrique en dessous du Sahara. Elle adopte les critères de philosophicité proposés par le Conseil Inter-africain de Philosophie: « Face à la difficulté de décider quels travaux sont philosophiques et quels autres ne le sont pas... (on) a choisi d'entendre le mot 'philosophie' au sens le plus large, et d'inclure, de ce fait, dans ce répertoire, des travaux qu'une distinction plus stricte des genres aurait renvoyés à d'autres disciplines.

On trouvera donc ici, à côté de travaux relevant d'une analyse conceptuelle... (pratiquée) habituellement dans les départements de philosophie de nos universités, quantité de travaux qui, tout en relevant, d'abord, d'autres disciplines (notamment... (de) ce qu'on pourrait appeler une sociologie des représentations collectives), n'en sont pas moins directement 'exploitables' par le philosophe » (HOUNTONDJI, Paulin J., (ed), Bilan de recherche philosophique africaine. En principe, tous les écrits philosophiques, édités ou non, figurent dans ce Répertoire, à l'exception des nombreux travaux académiques de graduat. Il inclut donc les livres, articles et autres textes écrits par les Africains (y compris ceux de la diaspora) et tous les écrits philosophiques de n'importe quel auteur sur l'Afrique ou édités en Afrique (Cfr HOUNTONDJI, Paulin J., (ed), o.c., p.X-XV).

Dans le Répertoire les auteurs sont signalés en ordre alphabétique et leurs publications chronologiquement. La bibliographie reprend, en principe, la littérature philosophique africaine publiée en langues occidentales et/ou en langues africaines.

Les livres et les publications collectives sont marqués d'un astérisque * afin de les distinguer des autres documents.

Inleiding

Deze bibliografie wil de inventaris opmaken van de wijsgerige publicaties betreffende Afrika onder de Sahara. Daarvoor worden de criteria aangewend die voorgesteld werden door de Inter-Afrikaanse Raad voor Wijsbegeerte: omwille van de moeilijkheid te beslissen welke werken wijsgerig zijn en welke niet, heeft men verkozen het woord « wijsbegeerte » in de breedste zin te nemen, en hier door het feit zelf werken op te nemen die een striktere onderscheiding van de disciplines naar andere gespecialiseerde bibliografieën zouden verwezen worden.

Zo worden niet enkel die publicaties opgenomen die handelen over het object, de methode of de kritiek van de wetenschappen, zoals het gebruikelijk is in onze Departementen van wijsbegeerte (wijsgerige publicaties in strikte zin), maar ook antropologische en sociologische werken die betrekking hebben op de collectieve voorstelling van een of ander Afrikaans volk en voor de wijsgeer onmiddellijk bruikbaar kunnen zijn (Cfr HOUNTONDJI, Paulin J., (ed), Bilan de recherche philosophique africaine. In principe worden alle filosofische geschriften opgenomen, uitgegeven of niet, met uitzondering van de al te talrijke academische werken voor het bekomen van een graduaat. Het bevat dus boeken, artikels en andere teksten door Afrikanen of Afro-Afrikanen van de diaspora geschreven, en wijsgerige geschriften van gelijk welke auteur over Afrika of in Afrika uitgegeven (Cfr Ibidem, p.X-XV).

In het Repertorium worden de auteurs vermeld in de alfabetische orde; de publicaties van één auteur in chronologische orde van verschijnen. Het Repertorium neemt titels op geschreven in Westerse en/of in Afrikaanse talen.

Boeken en collectieve publicaties worden voorafgegaan door een sterretje * om ze te onderscheiden van tijdschriftartikelen, bijdragen aan een bundel of andere documenten.
