The material basis and LCA of the ICT

In a nutshell

Although information and communication technologies are associated with a dematerialised society, questioning about resources is at the heart of the ICT eco-system as it will always need a material basis. Many resources are required to build ICT and the trend pushing towards more complexity for more performances will not decrease this reality. It is necessary to understand the related emerging issues, including the scarcity of elements, their sourcing and supply issues, the criticality of certain metals and minerals, and the restrictions on use of some elements and substances. It is usually quite rare to gather in one single experts panel many stakeholders implied in the life-cycle of an ICT product. For this reason, the program of this third day aims at covering some of the environmental questions raised by the manufacturing process of high quality semiconductors and nanomaterials, and to study the alternatives to the exploitation of resources or the means to reduce it (recycling, maintenance to extend the life of existing products, ...).
