    L'Unité des Rickettsies étudie transversalement tous les aspects des rickettsies et des  rickettsioses, incluant l'épidémiologie et l'étude des relations tiques-rickettsies, la  taxonomie et la phylogénie, la physiopathologie en particulier les interactions avec le  système immunitaire, la détection et l'identification, la sensibilité aux antibiotiques et le traitement. Les principaux genres bactériens étudiés sont Rickettsia, Orientia, Coxiella,  Bartonella et Ehlichia, les outils d'étude comportent modèles animaux, modèles cellulaires,  biologie moléculaire (amplification-clonage-séquençage automatique), morphologie  (microscopie confocale, microscopie électronique) et immunologie (cytokines, réponses  lymphocytaires, fonctions macrophagiques).

    Dr van Saene is consultant/reader in medical microbiology at the University of Liverpool and the Royal Liverpool Children's Hospital, Alder Hey. He obtained his MD in Belgium and his PhD in The Netherlands. His research has focused on the ecological impact of antimicrobial therapy, and infection prevention, particularly in ventilated patients. In 1983 with the late Dr Stoutenbeek, Dr van Saene introduced selective decontamination of the digestive tract [SDD], which has caused controversy over the last decade. This year the controversy surrounding SDD has resolved with the two recent meta-analyses showing a significant mortality reduction of 20% and 30%.

    James W Ironside is Professor of Clinical Neuropathology in the University of Edinburgh, and an Honorary Consultant
    neuropathologist at the Lothian University Hospitals NHS Trust. He has worked on the UK National CJD Surveillance project since 1990, and was closely involved in the identification of variant CJD in 1996. Current research interests include the peripheral pathogenesis of variant CJD in man, and the relationship between disease phenotype, genotype and PrP biochemistry in sporadic CJD. He is a member of SEAC, the UK Advisory Body on prion diseases, and a member of the WHO working group on TSE Diagnostics.
