How can I test this?
The set of files provided above includes everything you need for testing, to the extent current computer configurations are still compatible with applications build in 2012 / 2013. In particular, updates of PDF reader applications may imply changes in the configuration of REtool to make it able to «find» your new version and use it to open the draft documents. You may try to contact us in case it would not work (see at the bottom of the page).
How can I start building a new tool on this basis?
REtool is based on the proprietary software Filemaker. Hence the part that his made freely available is the structure of the database, the GUI design, and the numerous scripts used within the tool.
To further develop REtool on this basis, you need at least a copy of FileMaker Pro 12 or later, but it is preferable to use FileMaker Pro Advanced (v 12 or later), as it is needed to (freely) distribute copies of your work using FileMaker Runtime. In addition, the «Advanced» version has debugging features that may be very useful.
When using FileMaker, open the file REtool-database.fmp12. To access the full functionality of FileMaker, click on «Use standard FileMaker menus», which is a sub-item of the «Tools» menu.
We think that the value of this work partly resides in its objectives and the functionality that was created, not just in the tool itself. We hope that testing this can be an inspiring experience leading to the development of new tools. Whether this is done with FileMaker or not is for you to judge. FileMaker was used because it permits very quick development of medium-complexity databases and runs on both Windows and Mac systems. Other tools may have other advantages, including easier sharing of coding efforts.
Where are the review comments?
The review comments on IPCC AR5 are now publicly available on the website of the IPCC (see http://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar5/ , select a volume of the report and click on «drafts and review material»). However, the file format differ from what was available to the Authors and Review Editors, which were working documents.
This «open source» copy of REtool include a few comments for testing purposes only.

Support
Somme support was available during the preparation of AR5, WGII. As the report was finalized, this is now closed. For informations, you may send an e-mail to philippe {dot} marbaix {at} uclouvain.be. If REtool is not running on your system, please provide system information (OS, version, name and version of the PDF reader). Note that REtool was not tested on Windows 10.
REtool was a software made available to Review Editors of IPCC WGII during the preparation of AR5. This page now makes it freely available to all, so that it may inspire the development of tools to help with the preparation of new reports.
