Study objectives

The second study cycle aims to deepen the specialised studies of the first cycle ("candidature"). In the linguistic field, focus is placed on the scientific study of the functioning, history and evolution of the ancient languages without neglecting the constant practice of translation exercises based on themes, unseen translations and cursory readings. With respect to the study of authors and the history of literary works, special importance is given to later writings and Christian, Medieval and modern texts. The commentaries on the texts include not only all the tools of philological analysis (linguistics, textual criticism, study of sources, survival, computerised data bases, etc. ...), but also the modern practices of literary analysis (intertextuality, narratology, structuralism, ...).

Admission conditions

This programme is accessible to students who have passed the first study cycle ("candidature") or who hold a diploma judged to be equivalent.

Admission procedure

The conditions and regular admission procedures are detailed in the "General Information" section of the Web page :

http://www.ucl.ac.be/etudes/libres/acces.html
.

General structure of the programme

The second study cycle programme ("licence"), consists of in-depth studies of ancient languages and authors, the preparation and writing of a thesis and a choice of optional courses linked to the thesis or the interests of the students. It allows for the possibility of integrating or embarking on the teacher-training programme ( "agrégation") in classical languages and literature.

Programme content

CLAS21 First year

Before the 20th October of each of the two years of the programme, the student will submit a programme project for his course subjects to the department, as well as the title for his thesis and the name of his promoter. Any student whose programme does not conform to the required norms or is handed in after the deadline, risks having his exam registration refused.
