Aims

By the end of the course the student will have acquired an understanding of the principles underlying the evolution of Latin towards the Romance languages in the Iberian peninsula.

Main themes

- Linguistic typology of the Romance languages and dialects in the Iberian peninsula and the "Romania nueva".
- Study of the main varieties of the Spanish language, particularly in Andalusia and in Latin America.
- Study of the internal and external factors that have led to phonetic, lexical and morphosyntactic differentiation.
- Special attention is given to the numerous characteristic features they share in comparison with other Romance languages.

Content and teaching methods

The course takes a twofold approach:
1. A synchronic approach
Typology of the Romance languages of the Iberian peninsula (Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, and Galician) and of the main varieties of the Spanish language in Spain and Latin America.
2. A diachronic approach
Studies the linguistic evolution of the Iberian peninsula, starting with vulgar Latin, and analyses the internal and external factors that led to phonetic, lexical, and morphosyntactic differentiation.
