Aims

Test various methods of textual analysis in the study of a dramatic literary work.
Moreover, by the end of the tutorials, students should be able to :
interpret dramatic works which belong to the French language heritage (from the 17th till the 21st century) ;
study the effects of construction of the represented reality (particularly on the basis of the notion of literary genres) ;
replace these texts within a historical perspective ;
analyse the aesthetic dimension of the works studied.
This teaching will thus prepare them to the personal choices which the writing of a licence thesis requires.

Main themes

The analysis of one or several dramatic works written in French will provide students with the opportunity to become familiar with a wide range of methods of explanation.
The tutorials, taking the form of an interactive seminar, bring together a limited number of students (maximum of 20). Together, they examine the linguistic, stylistic, and aethetic dimensions of a certain number of works. Students are lead to elaborate, individually or in groups, a critical discourse about a work. Oral discussions are stimulated by the reading of critical commentaries elaborated by specialists of the litarery genres or authors. A place is kept for specific pedagogical initiatives.

Content and teaching methods

The complete and detailed reading of literary dramatic works in French with the help of various methods constitue the contents of the course.
Examples of authors or genres which can be examined : Corneille, Racine, Molière, Marivaux, Beaumarchais, the Romantic Drama, Claudel, Camus, Ionesco, Beckett, Duras, etc.

Other information (prerequisite, evaluation (assessment methods), course materials recommended readings, ...)

Prerequisite : the course will not attain its goal if students do not acquire during the first weeks a good knowledge of the work under study.
Evaluation : written exam. For the tutorials, the assessment is both continuous and final. The evaluation covers tutorial participation, personal interventions and a personal work (analysis of a dramatic work not covered in class).
