Aims

The objective of this course is to enable students to understand the complexity of the sociopolitical phenomenon represented by the State, through the study of its philosophical, historical, political, sociological, psychological, economic, geopolitical, legal and managerial components.

Content and teaching methods

The first part of the course goes back to the main philosophical, political and sociological definitions of the state in the modern and contemporary occidental thought. The second part examines how modern states have been transforming, since they emerged, in similar or opposite ways, for instance concerning political system or international relations. The third part tackles some of the current issues, like globalisation or European building, which challenge the nation state model, if not the state model.
