Aims

The course aims at developing the interactive communication skills in the Dutch language, in order to make them operational in the social and professional context in which they will be used.

Reading Comprehension:

- The student should be able to read autonomously and to understand texts (articles, reports, …) concerned with contemporary and field-related problems.
- The student should be able to understand standard professional and field-related correspondence.
Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

Listening Comprehension:
Individual:
- The student should be able to follow and to understand the essentials of a conference or lecture provided the
topic is reasonably familiar or field-related. o The student should be able to understand most television or radio
documentaries or news items on current affairs.
Interactive:
- The student should be able to understand the essential elements in discussions and debates on subjects related to
their field of studies and to understand what is said in an everyday conversation in standard language.

Speaking Skills:
Individual:
- The student should be able to present in a clear way an exposition that is prepared and to answer the questions
put by the public in an adequate way.
- The student should be able to take a clear stand, giving the advantages and disadvantages of different points of
view.
Interactive:
- The student should be able to take an active part in a debate on a field-related issue, accounting for and sustaining
his/her views.
- The student should be able to have a conversation with a Dutch speaking patient (questioning the symptoms,
explaining the diagnosis and the treatment) without creating stress on any participant.

Writing Skills:
- The student should be able to write a short professional report, abstract or letter.

Code:
Vocabulary:
consolidation of the students' range of basic vocabulary (+/- 2000 words) and integration of basic medical vocabulary (+/- 500 words)
Grammar:
consolidation of the command of the basic structures of the Dutch language.The use of vocabulary and grammar is seen from a communicative viewpoint Nevertheless, accuracy is not neglected.

Culture:
In the development of all the above-mentioned skills the course will aim at making the students aware of Dutch and Flemish cultural aspects.

Main themes

The course is directed at interactive communication. The provided activities are aiming at the development of communication skills needed in the professional field, in commanding the code (general and specific vocabulary and grammar), necessary for putting these skills in practice.These activities will simulate real situations in which oral skills are required. They will be of two types:

1) presentation and activation of functions of language directly linked to professional life (social skills, telephonic
communication , role-playing patient-therapeutist)
2) individual and interactive speaking activities. This part includes a presentation on a subject related to the medical field, followed by a discussion (about 30 min.)

All these activities require preparatory work from the student. He is also demanded to improve his linguistic knowledge (vocabulary, elements of grammar).

Content and teaching methods

- 30-hours course taught 2 hours a week during the second term.
- Intended for the students EDHP 13 BA and KINE 13 BA.

Pre-requisites:
The student should have the mastered the basic grammar and vocabulary ( level B1)

Aims:
B2 level for the speaking skills; being able to function in a professional context.
Pedagogical approach:
- individual (presentation) and interactive speaking exercises
- listening and reading comprehension exercises on subjects of field related interest.

Evaluation:
Continuous assessment and oral exam

Requirements:
The student should have the productive command of grammar and basic vocabulary and also the language skills of level B1 of the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages" (The first degree of the intermediate level).


Workload:
Classroom hours : 30 hours
Self-study : 42 hours

Guidance:
Lessons in groups of 15-20 students
The teacher is available during his office-hour(s) and can be contacted by e-mail.

Teaching material:
Course notes : "Interactieve communicatie" Portfolio of reading and vocabulary-listAudio- and videotapes on subjects related to physiotherapy, sports and physical training.

Evaluation:
- Continuous assessment (summative and formative) based on the active participation in the course, the
presentations, different tests.
- Oral exam based on an article prepared by the student and an improvised dialogue.

Level: Third year of the Baccalauréat in Physiotherapy, Sports and Physical Training

Rhythm: A 30-hour course taught 1 hour a week throughout the academic year
