Aims

AIMS: A complementary approach of the role of General Practitioner, that introduces the specificity of the clinical approach and decision mechanisms in general practice, from patient's subjective signs to problem's resolution. A special interest would be bought to the person centred approach, dealing with patients and problems with respect and dignity and developing a relationship of trust. Attention of the students would be keeped to develop their sensitivity for protection of marginalised patients and the use of general practice consultation to produce an effective doctor patient relationship.

Main themes

Through 2x8 oral courses several aspects of GP abilities in management patient's consultation will be progressively discovered, concluding the meeting at patient's home of 1 or 2 complex clinical cases, prepaired by one of the fellows of he CUMG team. Different abilities would be progressively developed: to recognise the professional responsibility of GP to their community, in negotiating management plans with their patients, integrating physical, psychological, social, cultural and existential factors, utilising the knowledge and trust engendered by repeated contacts. To discover the professional role of the GP by promoting health, preventing disease and providing cure, care, or palliation. This is done either directly or through the services of others according to the health needs and resources available within the community they serve, assisting patients where necessary in accessing these services. The ability to promote health and well being by applying health promotion and disease prevention strategies appropriately. The ability to recognise that GPs have a responsibility not to medicalise normality.

Content and teaching methods

An original and interactive approach would be developed to give the possibility to all students to meet a complex and representative clinical case, at patient's home, a well in mind patient who has sufficient oral expression capacity to explain his medical case and has as good as possible resolved it when the students meet him (her), somewhere in Brussels or in Belgium. These personal contacts will be filmed on videotape, fully explored and used during the oral courses, that participants will animate by a personal contribution. Several tasks would be resolved and teamwork encouraged for medical references finding, written contribution, Internet contributions pooling, also.

Students would be individually evaluated at the end of MEGE2110 (An Introduction to General Practice (2)
"Meet a patient." ("Visages de patients") for the whole cyclus of GP Introduction courses (MEDI2112 & MEGE2110). Criteria for success will be personal good integration in teamwork, quality of personal contribution , active participation within courses and meeting with GP.
