Aims

These lectures give the students additional information to that presented at the main course. It covers in depth the physiology and pathophysiology of the bone marrow and its diseases, and also of the diseases of the lymph nodes and of the spleen. An update of therapeutic and diagnostic procedures is included.

Main themes

The topics that are covered vary every year according to the progress in the field and also according to the necessity to have an overview of a particular disease or syndrome. Each is teached taking into account the pathophysiology, the clinical presentation and treatment. Anemias, leukemias, lymphomas ; Present day concepts of hematopoiesis : growth factors and regulating factors - pathophysiology of anemia - cytopenias - the lymphocyte - both normal and abnormal - the myelodysplasias - minimal residual disease - allogeneic and autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation - specific blood and bone marrow tests.

Content and teaching methods

The course is intended for students who wish to acquired further knowledge in haematology. It is complementary to the main haematology course.
