Aims

The course aims at giving a broad picture of Indian civilization and the major stages of its development. A special attention will be given to a critical view of the various sources.

Main themes

One will study the main stages of the Indian civilization. The chronology will serve as a frame in which the various features of Indian culture will be analysed (religion, art, literature…) . A critical stance will be adopted throughout. The course will put forward the relative continuity of Indian civilization unto the contemporary development.

Content and teaching methods

The course will analyse the main stages of India's historical development. It will start with the Indus Civilization and ends with India's Independence in 1947. The major periods studies will be: the Indus civilization, the Aryan invasions, the Empires, the feudal era, the Delhi Sultanate, The Moghul Empire, The Colonization, The struggle for Independence are among the themes which will be dealt with.

Prerequisites : none.
Evaluation : oral exam.
