Aims

By the end of the course the student should be able to reflect critically on the norms for pronunciation in Dutch. They should be acquainted with the phonetic and phonological system of Dutch and be able to write spoken Dutch in the I.P.A.

Main themes

Starting from a phonetic and phonological description of Modern Dutch a general review of problems, norms and attitudes concerning the spoken varieties of Dutch is presented. Students are supposed to apply the theoretical insights to practical examples. Some phonetic practice in Standard Dutch is part and parcel of this course

Content and teaching methods

Summary:
Overview of the phonetic and phonological principles necessary for an adequate description of spoken Dutch
Overview of phonetic problems in Dutch
Attitudes and norms in Dutch pronunciation
Teaching method:
Students have to prepare an individual presentation on a specific aspect of Dutch pronunciation
Exercises in pronunciation
Evaluation:
Based on the presentation, on the phonetic transcriptions and on the individual pronunciation

Prerequisite: good proficiency in spoken and written Dutch
Exam: 2 parts: practical application and presentation /examination on theoretical aspects
