Aims

By the end of this course, the student should be able:
to identify the philosophical problems linked to cultural anthropology;
to grasp the historical and interdisciplinary dimensions of this problem;
to relate the problems discussed to current events.

Main themes

We shall go through the central tendencies of anthropology as a social science (evolutionism, diffusionism, functionalism, structuralism, etc.) through two questions that cross paths with these tendencies without being limited to them: 1) the relation between self and other; 2) the question of particularity, or of cultural identity.

Pre-requisites:
Some familiarity with cultural anthropology.

Assessment:
Oral exam based on the material covered in class.
