Aims

The objective of the seminar is to guide students towards an in-depth examination of specific aspects of that branch of law covered by the seminar, the basics of which have already been taught during earlier legal degree studies. The seminar's theme varies from year to year. It is sufficiently versatile to enable it to be split into some fifteen subjects closely related by a common set of problems.

Main themes

The seminar has two objectives. Firstly, during the year, students have to make an oral presentation of the results of research on the assigned subject and, secondly, produce a written submission in which they set out and critically analyse the subject matter integrating the discussions and debates which will have followed their own oral presentation and that of the other seminar participants. The first presentations take place during the second six-month period. In the first half of the year, each student begins the examination of his or her subject. Participants have to make regular progress reports on their research with appraisals indicating any difficulties encountered. This is a team effort to ensure coordination of the various written submissions. During the first six months, speakers are invited to some sessions to talk on a subject closely related to the seminar theme. The expert speaker invited may be from within or outside the Faculty. The seminar ends with an evaluation of each student. This evaluation covers the work carried out during the year, the student's contribution to the various written papers and debates, the quality of his or her oral presentation and, of course, the quality of the final paper submitted.
