Aims

The first part of the course covers the basics, diverse fundamental aspects of enzymology: the principles are illustrated by concrete examples.

Main themes

First Part: 1. Weak interactions and structures: a. the nature of weak interactions and their importance in enzyme structure and molecular recognition b. the structure of proteins: primary, secondary and tertiary structure c. methods of structure determination. 2. Enzyme catalysis: a. enzyme kinetics b. the principles of enzyme catalysis (nature, bases, approximation and orientation, distortion, acid-base catalysis, covalent catalysis) c. examples of enzyme catalysis.
