Aims

The aim of the course is to offer training in the area of research in visceral/orthopaedic surgery and anaesthesia.

Main themes

In the first part, the choice of animal models and their use, the type of surgery, and in vivo monitoring are considered in the light of current regulations and ethical guidelines. Alternative methods to the use of animals are then evaluated. The second part concerns various specific problems related to modern surgery: transplantation and organ storage, bone allografts, xenografts, artificial organs, bio-engineering, in vitro bone reconstruction, colorectal cancer, liver regeneration and drug interactions are considered. Emphasis is laid upon the experimental study of these different pathologies and on the experimental models which enable study of the pathological mechanisms involved.
